Molly Bang grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, child of a medical illustrator and a doctor. She has lived and worked in Japan. When she attempted to become a newspaper reporter, she found herself unsuited to the task and some of her friends convinced her she should do what she always wanted to do: illustrate children's books. She has been influenced by folktales, by her own children, and by her concern that children did not learn enough about science. To the latter end, she became the co-author with Peny Chisholm, professor of ecology at MIT, of the Sunlight Series.
